The Artist and his materials

The artist and his material

“Life, it is said, is an art and human beings should mould their lives as an artist creates a picture.” -G. J. Lindemans

“The ancient concept of reincarnation suggests a master-key, for it shows the human soul as irresistibly drawn to and choosing the opportunities and faculties which will enable it to fulfill its true calling and to acquire ever higher capabilities. It is with us all precisely as with the artist, who is drawn to his study and chooses his tools and materials, accepting and utilizing them as he finds them, knowing that they are as they should be and that it is up to him to make the best of them.”

From Sunrise magazine, December 2005/January 2006;  Theosophical University Press

Theosophy: Greek theos (god, divinity) and sophia (wisdom). Its philosophy is a contemporary presentation of the perennial wisdom underlying the world’s religions, sciences, and philosophies.

We are not brought into existence by chance nor thrown up into earth-life like wreckage cast along the shore, but are here for infinitely noble purposes.— Katherine Tingley

Vedder’s interest in theosophy manifested itself in pictorial representations of the soul. The Sorrowing Soul Between Doubt and Faith shows the quest of the soul. The soul on the upward path towards Atma. It may suggest only the invisible, angelic messengers of God are permitted to illuminate all that true faith entails for men and women, helping them to progress toward a spiritual life of freedom.
